When Your Hard Work Doesn't Seem to Add Up: A Reminder from Scripture
Have you ever felt like you over planned, put in all your effort, and saw minimal results? That’s a tough place to be. You prepared, did your homework, and when you finally looked at the data—at the fruits of your labor—you couldn’t help but wonder: Was it even worth it?
The truth is, the Bible has a lot to say about moments like these. If we had a measuring stick for our efforts, the math would often just not add up. Yet, time and again, Scripture encourages us to press on, to keep going, and to resist the urge to quit or even doubt.
Let's reflect on Galatians 6:9:"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."
There it is—"at the proper time." Everything we do for Christ isn’t about our timing. We are on His clock; the results belong to Him. From the beginning to the end, it’s all about His plan and His purpose. Our part? To simply not give up.
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Berry, Alabama, where I shared my testimony. The host, a good brother in Christ, had high expectations for the turnout—perhaps the local high school gym, which seats around 600 people. We both anticipated a crowd that size or bigger. But when it was my turn to speak, I saw only about 25 to 35 people in attendance. My friend looked at me with a hint of disappointment, but I wanted him to know—it's okay. The people who were there needed to hear what God had laid on my heart. I wasn’t discouraged because I knew in my heart that the results are always in God’s hands. He had done His part, and I trust that He is always working.
It’s natural for us to measure success by numbers—how many people show up, how much money is raised, or how big the impact seems. Sometimes, these metrics make us feel accomplished. But that’s not how God measures things. When Jesus chose His disciples, He didn’t pick the most desirable, the most accomplished, or those with the biggest influence. No, His math is often the opposite of ours.
He chose fishermen, tax collectors, and unlikely men and women—people who left us scratching our heads. He spat and made mud to heal a man’s eyes, asked a cripple if he wanted to be healed, and told a Samaritan woman to give Him a drink. The examples are endless. God’s ways are higher than ours, and His selection process often defies human logic.
So, the next time you’re tempted to compare yourself to someone else or measure your task against someone else’s, resist that urge. What God has given you to do is good. Stand firm, do it diligently, and trust that His results will come in His time.
Keep going. Don’t give up. The harvest is coming—at just the right time.
